Description du produit

Being able to recognize hazards in the environment where they occur is critical to mineworker safety and health. EXAMiner was developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) as a free, Windows-based software that can be downloaded from the NIOSH Mining website to run on laptops or personal computers. This software gives mineworkers the opportunity to practice searching for hazards in virtual work environments while performing a virtual workplace examination. Using the software, mineworkers perform the workplace examination search task by navigating around panoramic scenes depicting locations at a mine site. Mineworkers then mark as many hazards as they find with a mouse click, and each workplace examination search task can be performed in a five-minute time frame. After completing the workplace examination, mineworkers are provided feedback on their performance along with information to supplement their knowledge of the hazards. Finally, EXAMiner gives instructors the ability to create custom hazard recognition training materials, either by using NIOSH scenes and scenarios or by importing their own panoramic pictures into the software.

The EXAMiner software has been well-received by the mining community. As of January 2020 (and while still in its Beta version), users had downloaded the software nearly 900 times from NIOSH’s website. To date, 533 unique users reported usage data from the software with 1300 training sessions launched and 192 custom scenes created (the actual numbers are probably greater as users must opt into this auto-reporting feature in the software). According to this usage data, the software is being used in the U.S., Australia, Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, DR Congo, Ecuador, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, Sudan, and Tanzania.

EXAMiner is available for download on the NIOSH Mining website: www.cdc.gov/niosh/mining/works/coversheet2050.html. The page includes a Quick Start PDF with step-by-step instructions for how to use EXAMiner.

Due to its flexible design allowing users to input their own panoramic images, trainers in other industries, such as manufacturing and construction, have also used EXAMiner to help their employees identify hazards in their workplaces.
